Just coming back from a few days driving around Lombok. What an adventure! The detailed trip report will follow shortly.
The picture to the left was taken near the Gangga Waterfall in the North of Lombok, about 2 hours away from Senggigi. The sign says the following: “Land for Sale - Come and invest for your future in the exotic and extraordinary natural beauty of Lombok”.
Truly - Lombok is a magnificent island, a natural beauty in its own way. The rice fields are green, the waterfalls lush and refreshing, the Hot Springs are hot, the mountains high and majestic. Exactly what you would expect from an island paradise in the tropics:

When reading the last issue of The Bali Times, I had a few good laughs. This weekly newspaper is actually known for portraying the Bali Life from an Expat point of view.
Mainly you can read about foreigners arrested on Drug Charges (amazingly still plenty of tourists think they can get away doing drugs in Bali), or about illegal workers arrested by officials.
It features as well the latests governmental initiates which affect the tourism industry and locals alike; as well as local and international news, horoscopes, spiritual guidances from famous Gurus, the cinema schedule or a Community Noticeboard.

For Westerners it is sometimes difficult to understand Asia’s obsession with Karaoke. What’s so exciting about embarrassing yourself in front of your friends or even strangers with your non-existing singing skills?
Fortunately - Karaoke is more than that, it can be a favorite pastime or your dirty little secret.
Once you take your time to get the hang of it - you could have lots of pleasure and a great time enjoying yourself.
But let’s first shed some light on Karaoke and some stereotypes - on what most people believe to understand about it:

Inspired by an idea of Mon earlier on this post, I searched the net far and wide to find the most common stereotypes about Nationalities.
Generalizations about cultures or nationalities can be a source of pride, anger or simply bad jokes. Some people say that in all stereotype there is some basis in reality, as they don’t develop in vacuum.
To give a more serious definition: “National Stereotype is a system of culture-specific beliefs connected with the nationality of a person. This system includes beliefs concerning those properties of human beings that may vary across nations, such as appearance, language, food, habits, psychological traits, attitudes, values etc.”

While I know funny kind of signs aka “Don’t pee in the elevator - Fine 2.000$!” from Singapore; I wasn’t aware that other countries are worried about their citizen’s hygienic toilet behaviors as well.
It came a bit as a surprise to see a similar sign at Bali’s beautiful Water Temple - Pura Ulun Danu - near the small town of Bedugul at Lake Bratan (”Holy Mountain Lake”). Bedugul is most famous for it’s Strawberry Fields, which provide a fresh, red harvest almost all-year-round due to the higher and cooler climate…

Found that picture in this week’s issue of the ‘Lombok Times’ and it reminded me, that I still owe you guys the 2nd part of Sex, Lust and Foolishness in Asia. Unfortunately the article - which was 90% done - was a victim of my recent computer problems, as Draft Articles in my Zoundry Blog Writer were all gone to Bit Heaven.
Oops!
Lazy as I am these days, it’s been a bit tough writing it all down again, still working on it.

There was this guy who painted this picture to mark the toilet entrances for male and female in Vang Vien, Laos. He obviously smoked too much Marihuana, as he couldn’t remember, which side was for which gender.
Nothing unusual so far. Not in Vang Vien.
But laziness comes with it as well. So instead of starting all over again, drawing a new picture - he just switched the sides ‘top-side-down’.
Uhhhh - done! That wasn’t that hard, was it?
